Student Sponsorship Scheme 2009

In an effort to support the inspirational work of young emerging West Australian textile artists, we offer encouragement in the form of sponsoring a student each year. Information can be seen on our website.

Selection will soon be taking place for work achieved in any given year by an enrolled student in years 11/12 and above.

During first semester Silk Wholesalers send a notice out to all secondary schools, advanced institutions with textile departments, and other interested parties.

Teachers are encouraged to inform their students about this scheme at the beginning of each year, and to advise Silk Wholesalers of up coming textile exhibitions and achievements.

Applicants are encouraged to support their nomination with visual aids such as emails photographs or DVD’s, and a brief artist’s statement. Applicants under consideration may be asked at attend an informal interview during February & March.

Anyone interested in nominating themselves, a friend, or a promising student are invited to do so. All applications from third parties must be supported by a letter of interest from the student. Nominations can be submitted for 2009 between the end of the academic year and 31 March 2010. The Sponsored Student will be advised shortly after the opening of ‘Perspectives’ at the Art Gallery of WA, early April. The selected student will be using Silk as their preferred medium.

Our ‘student of the year’ will receive an encouragement pack containing two meter of each silk we carry, to stimulate variety and introduce working with new silks. He/she will be offered their own page in the Gallery on Silk Wholesalers’ website, where a display portfolio of work, artist profile, contact details etc. can be viewed; and a discount on silk purchased (for own use) valid for the following 12 months.
